Fun Ways to Get Outside this Fall

By now, some of us have had enough of summer heat and humidity. Luckily, this time of year is one of our favorites in Williamsburg, Virginia, because of all the fun ways to get outside this Fall. If you’re headed to Williamsburg for a weekend getaway, you’ve got to try one of these amazing outdoor adventures.

See Fall Foliage

Few sights are as beautiful as the autumnal wonderland of the beautiful and historic College of William & Mary (one of Williamsburg’s best low-key but beautiful spots). To enjoy the firey colors of fall with a side of shopping and a tasty lunch, visit Colonial Williamsburg to see trees transform into spectacular shades of gold, red, and orange.

If there are members of your family that you want to include in the fun but who can’t walk for long periods of time, drive your car down to Colonial Parkway and enjoy 23 miles of scenic, natural beauty. Williamsburg is also home to many historic parks, including the Colonial National Historic Park, which share’s the Historic Triangle’s fascinating history. Be sure to check any park’s websites for hours and possible fees.

Go For a Ride

The Capital Trail is 52 miles of paved trails for runners, walkers, skaters, cyclists, and dog walkers that run through Richmond, Jamestown, and Williamsburg, with many historic attractions to enjoy along the way. Jamestown, for example, is home to the first English settlement, and riders will also pass by Revolutionary War battlegrounds and Sherwood Forest Plantation, President John Tyler’s home. The trails are busy with hundreds of visitors a day, so check the website for trail etiquette!

You can always catch a ride at Busch Gardens—it’s home to world-class roller coasters, after all! The Pantheon is the newest addition to the park, and it also happens to be the world’s fastest multi-launch coaster. If you prefer a slower pace, there are rides and attractions for all ages and speed preferences. Busch Gardens in Williamsburg has been voted the world’s most beautiful theme park every year since 1990, so you’re sure to enjoy the views from the top of every ride!

Enjoy Outdoor Events

Few feelings are better than a deep breath of crisp fall air. Visit the Williamsburg Farmers Market in Merchants Square for fresh, seasonal products from local growers and producers, or head to Yorktown Market Days through October 15 for spectacular river views and live music as you shop.

Yorktown’s Rhythms on the Riverwalk Concert Series runs from September 8 through October 13, and features local favorites who play a little bit of everything—jazz, big band, and country. Don’t forget your blankets and chairs!

Celebrate autumn with the Sweethaven Harvest, a new pumpkin-picking experience with the most picturesque scenery. This is a great place to pick up fall décor, like pumpkins, sunflowers, zinnias, gourds, mums and corn stalks. Delicious candy, coffee, and fall-themed treats await as well. Learn more here!

Play Golf
What’s better than a clear fall day on the golf course with a group of good friends? Williamsburg has your golfing needs covered with award-winning courses like Kiskiack Golf Club, a beautiful course with unique challenges, picturesque greens and excellent service. King’s Creek is proud to partner with Kiskiack and offers owners excellent rates to play at this breathtaking and highly favored course. There’s also Colonial Heritage Golf Club and Golden Horseshoe Golf Club, both known for their picturesque backdrops and immaculate playing conditions. And a golf game makes the perfect addition to a weekend itinerary since you’re so close to Colonial Williamsburg and all of its shopping, spa and dining destinations. Enjoy your game!
