Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 8, and it’s the perfect opportunity to make Mom feel loved! Every mother has carved her own way and has her own story, so how we celebrate ours should reflect that. Whether it’s a fancy brunch with mimosas, a quiet walk in a beautiful garden, a raucous street festival or a wild ride on a roller coaster, Williamsburg has you covered with a very special Mother’s Day.
The Nature Lover
Williamsburg is home to some of the most beautiful and rejuvenating outdoor spaces around. Getting outside is a great way to spend quality time with Mom, whether it’s riding bikes on one of the many walking and biking trails that come in and out of Williamsburg or a scenic walk amongst the colorful rhododendrons and azaleas of the Sunken Garden and the Crim Dell meadow at the College of William & Mary.
One of our favorite walking and biking trails is just a hop, skip and a jump from King’s Creek: the Colonial Parkway. This scenic, three-lane, 23-mile roadway connects Williamsburg to Yorktown and Jamestown, tying the Historic Triangle’s cultural sites to local wildlife and pristine natural environments.
If mom enjoys horticulture, take a stroll through William & Mary’s Sunken Garden and Crim Dell meadow. If you look toward the Sunken Garden from the steps of the Wren building, you will see the two oldest trees on campus, a willow oak to the south (Quercus phellos) and a water oak (Quercus nigra) to the north.
The Crim Dell Bridge is also associated with a bit of folklore. If two people cross the bridge holding hands, they’ll be lifelong friends. Now, wouldn’t that be a sweet gesture?
The Art and Music Lover
Colonial Williamsburg’s 2nd Sundays Art and Music Festival is a party you can’t find anywhere else! With lots to see and do, this bustling street festival happens to fall on Mother’s Day this year, and the lineup of vendors and live musicians will be unforgettable. Walk the streets of Colonial Williamsburg together enjoying samples of delicious, locally inspired cuisine, chatting with authors or taking part in a painting project. Festival is from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The Thrill-Seeker/Foodie
Have an “adventure mom”? Bring her to Busch Gardens for the ride (or rides!) of her life. The addition of The Pantheon to Busch Gardens’ Festa Italia village has elevated the park’s portfolio to NINE world-class coasters! The Pantheon is the world’s fastest multi-launch roller coaster with a 180-foot drop, a top speed of 73 mph, a 95° drop, 4 launches, 5 air-time hills and 2 inversions.
When she’s had her fill of loop-de-loops, stay right where you are to experience Virginia’s largest spring food and wine festival! Experience epic flavors and endless possibilities with over 100 dishes, wines, cocktails and craft beers from around the globe, including new menus inspired by Australia and Greece! In addition to intriguing menus, Mom will love the live music, entertainment, and world-class shows.
The Wine Enthusiast
With over 40 acres of vineyards, an on-site garden, a hotel and two restaurants, The Williamsburg Winery is a wine and culinary destination fit for a queen. This Mother’s Day, the winery will host a Mother’s Day brunch buffet with an incredible menu designed by the Wessex Hundred culinary team. Enjoy mimosas and mini croissants, a carving station, and so much more! Get your tickets to this special event for Mom right here.
For years, the Historic Triangle has celebrated the people and events that shaped the future of our nation. This Mother’s Day, celebrate those who have shaped yours! Vacation is all about spending time with the most precious people in your life, after all. We hope you are able to enjoy a very special Mother’s Day.
