Fall Events to Look Forward to
Does the summer heat have you feeling totally drained? Here are three Fall events to look forward to in Jamestown! Read about them, and then book a trip to King’s Creek to experience it for yourself!
American Indian Heritage Celebration
When: October 10-11, 2020
First of our three Fall events to look forward to in Jamestown is, of course, the Jamestown Settlement! This historic site features a recreated Powhatan village set up to resemble life as it was for these indigenous people as they lived alongside English colonists. The recreated houses, ceremonial objects, and even crops are based off archaeological findings and descriptions recorded by English colonists. On a normal day, historical interpreter demonstrations show how the Powhatan culture grew and prepared food, processed animal hides, made tools and pottery, and wove natural fibers.
On October 10 and 11, there will be a two-day celebration of American Indian history and culture complete with in-depth demonstrations, performances, storytelling and children’s activities. Access is granted with your museum ticket purchase.
When: Saturday, October 17, 2020, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The 239th anniversary of America’s 1781 Revolutionary War victory at Yorktown will be celebrated at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. You can expect recreations of military experiences as well as artillery firings and interpretive programs.
Discover aspects of military life for early Americans, from enlistment to troop supplies and flintlock muskets to 18th-century medical care.
Guests will experience an introductory film and get access to a gallery of exhibits featuring immersive settings, artifacts and a 4-D experiential film on the Siege of Yorktown. This event is included with museum admission.
When: Friday and Saturday, October 23-24, 2020
If history is fun, then Halloween certainly can’t be overlooked! This 6th annual Halloween-themed museum night is perfect for children and families, with friendly and frightful festivities that include haunted houses centered around this year’s theme: “Classic Movie Monsters & Famous Fairytale Princesses.” Kids can also expect plenty of trick-or-treating, ghostly tales and ghoulish games from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on both dates.
The family-friendly Halloween fun is set against an incredible landscape transformed to impress all who love this holiday. Children can compete in games, hear scary stories, meet Dracula and Frankenstein along with Snow White and Cinderella, get their faces painted, do Halloween crafts, raid candy from recreated 17th-century ships, and much more.
Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at Jamestown Settlement. Tickets also will be available at the door. Annual passes and other discounts do not apply. Rain date is Sunday, October 27.
In response to COVID-19, the museums have made adjustments to operations and access to outdoor living-history areas and gallery exhibits so visitors can enjoy the museum experience while following new safety protocols and social-distancing procedures. Read here for more information.
